An outstanding clematis—from afar and up close. The multi-layered, multi-colored blooms provide pops of blue, lilac and violet hues to the garden or landscape. The spiky, almost thistlelike, centers add wonderful texture. Like other clematis vines, Multi Blue is manageable and looks impressive scrambling up a fence, trellis or arbor. It can even be grown in a container or patio pot. It’s an excellent choice for creating a privacy screen or adding vertical interest. The 4-5 in. flowers open in late spring or early summer and then bloom again in late summer. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Zones 3-9.

Pruning: In our Stoplight Pruning Guide, this variety is in the YELLOW category. It blooms best on old wood, but it can also bloom on new wood. Use caution when pruning to retain healthy stems from last season for best flowering.
Foliage: Opposite compound dark green in spring and summer, yellow in fall. Leaflets lanceolate to ovate 1-2″ long. Bronze colored when young.
